TOTAL FOUNDATION GOVERNANCE STRUCTURE

 

An open and collaborative organisation

The Total Foundation is a space which promotes dialogue and exchange for the benefit of its partners and their projects. As such, all stakeholders have a part to play in its governance. This is organised on three levels: the permanent team, the expert committees and the Management Board.

The permanent team: the operational body of the Foundation

On a day-to-day basis, the Total Foundation is run by a team of twelve people who work closely with project leaders. They receive partnership requests (over a thousand every year), examine them, and then send them off to the expert committees. Once the projects are launched, they ensure their implementation, regularly (and closely) monitoring the results. The Foundation requires its partners to provide accurate and systematic reporting.
The team also proposes new development strategies for the Foundation, which are then submitted to the Management Board.

The expert committees: decision-making support

In order to conduct its activities with due diligence, the Foundation relies on specific committees for each subject area, bringing together Total company employees and external experts. For example, the Environment and Biodiversity Committee is made up of twelve members, including nine prominent figures from outside the Group (biologists, geologists, academics, etc.). Together, they look over the applications pre-selected by the permanent team, and vote for the projects to be presented to the Management Board.

The Management Board: guarantor of the general policy

The Board ultimately makes a decision based on the projects selected by the committees. It also approves the budget, evaluates the initiatives being implemented, and validates the strategic guidelines proposed by the permanent team.
It is composed of ten members: six representatives of the Total Group and four external participants, eminent experts in their fields. The Board meets twice a year.

Budget allocated to the Foundation

Established in 1992, the Total Corporate Foundation benefits from a five-yearly endowment awarded by its founder, Total SA, to carry out its patronage and public interest activities. Initially dedicated to marine biodiversity research for the protection of the oceans, in 2008 the Foundation expanded the scope of its patronage to include actions in the areas of health, solidarity, and culture and heritage.To support these developments, the initial five-year endowment of 8 million euros was increased to 50 million euros, representing a minimum annual budget of 10 million euros.

The Foundation was extended for the 4th time in 2012 and for the period 2013-2017.

2015 in figures

The Total Foundation has supported over 190 projects and dedicated:

  • 3.6 million euros for health and solidarity;
  • 3.7 million euros for culture and heritage;
  • 2.7 million euros for oceans and biodiversity.
     

The groups philantropy department

The Total Group is extending the scope of its Foundation by accompanying many public interest programmes through its Philanthropy Department. 

Managed by the same team as that of the Foundation, it organises:

  • The partnership initiated in 2009 with the Ministry of Youth and the Experimental Youth-Development Fund (FEJ),
  • Support programmes for populations affected by humanitarian crises,
  • The partnership of the group with the French Society of Sea Rescuers (SNSM).

2015 in figures

Total's Philanthropy Department is:

  • a budget of 8.3 million euros including 2 million euros for the SNSM

In continuing the partnership it launched in 2009 with the FEJ, the Group is the sole private partner of the programme "La France s’engage" ("France, a nation of commitment"). The group will invest around 16.8 million euros in this project until 2018
